A plush attraction: Historic carriage robes now on display at local museum
SPRINGVALE — If you weigh it's cold outside, there's a new exhibit at the Sanford-Springvale Historical Museum that offers a meet of warmth.
Historic carriage robes now adorn the walls and fill the cases of the museum's two exposition rooms. The robes were made right here in Sanford in the Goodall mills during the last years of the 19th century up through the betimes 1930s.
Longtime antiques collector Paul Lehoux, of Cornish, donated the robes to the native historical society. Historian Harland Eastman and local carpenter Steve Vincent recently mounted the flaunt — which proved a challenging task given the size and heft of each trappings and the care needed for each.
The hard work paid off. Numerous robes, which people long ago draped over their laps during transportation rides in cold or blustery weather, hang from the walls and sit in cases and proffer a warmth of pleasing colors and patterns.
