History museum might want your old underwear for upcoming exhibit
ST. LOUIS • It's pass to get your panties in a bunch — along with bras, corsets and girdles of true note — and offer them to the Missouri History Museum.
The museum is planning a crucial exhibit on the evolution of women's underwear and needs the public's staff to round out its collection of old-fashioned and modern unmentionables. The "Underneath It All" display is slated to open July 1.
Curators are understandably picky about what they'll take, and the museum's underwear interests serve toward the antique and the exotic — like 19th century corsets and inflatable brassieres. But they also are looking for virtuousness examples of more everyday items of more recent vintage — like padded panties, 1980s mix with pads and a Wonderbra or two.
The goal is to chart the course of American women, persistence and consumer culture through the lens of lingerie, said Shannon Meyer, a superior curator who is organizing the exhibit.
"It's really about more than corsets and bullet bras," she said. "I aspire that, when people go to the exhibit, they walk away with a better understanding of women's experiences, and how history in general influenced something that seems as insignificant as underwear.
